The winner takes it all. The ‘Big Seven’ Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, Alphabet, Alibaba, and Tencent will dominate the platform economy in the next decade.
The largest 187 technology companies in the world have a total market value of US$ 7.000 billion, of which 70% is owned by the ‘Big Seven’. Research shows that this dominance will lead to an escalation of our labour laws, competition, and consumer protection. Only 2% of the companies active in the platform economy come from Europe. The ‘rules of the game’ in this platform economy are developed and determined outside the monitoring mechanisms of the EU.
The impact will be that Europe is fully dependent on the non-European platforms, which implies the weakening of Europe’s competitiveness. In addition the European market is very fragmentated which makes it more difficult for Europe to catch-up. For other companies it will become more difficult to compete: the ‘Big Seven’ dominate individual markets, they create and control connections in the networks that pervade our economies, they control crucial competitive bottlenecks, they will extract disproportionate value and they tip the global competitive balance. To strengthen their growth strategies, the ‘Big Seven’ will acquire numerous start-ups as well as established tech-companies M&A candidates such as Netflix, Tesla, Walgreens, CVG, Salesforce, Box, ServiceNow and others.
